What you’re dealing with

You have been told the fixture is obsolete and needs replacing, or a shop has handed you a cartridge that does not fit.

Cartridges are consumable parts. The hard bit is not fitting one — it is working out exactly which one a fifteen-year-old imported valve takes.

What the work may involve

• Identifying the fixture from the body casting, splines and handle broach
• Sourcing brand-specific cartridges rather than universal substitutes
• Extracting seized cartridges without damaging the valve body
• Cleaning and lubricating the bore before the new part goes in
• Re-indexing the handle and resetting the temperature stop
